Sample technical narrative

The engineering question

In this illustrative scenario, a tank owner has settlement survey information and needs an engineering assessment of its significance. The question is which evaluation method and additional data are appropriate before selecting a corrective action.

The proposed evaluation

A project scope would first establish the geometry, condition records, material information, relevant operating cases, and evaluation basis. The engineer would determine whether finite element analysis is appropriate and define the model assumptions, support representation, and review checks.

If FEA is used, the final project story should identify the modeled components, the basis for the applied conditions, and how model quality was checked. The illustration above shows only where a real model image could be presented. Its gold region marks an area of interest, not high stress or an acceptance threshold.

The decision to document

The completed evaluation would document its engineering conclusion, limitations, and recommended action. Analysis does not predetermine acceptance, eliminate repair requirements automatically, or create a blanket settlement exemption.
